For the past two decades, William Metz has been involved extensively with all levels of government in planning, training, and exercising for radiological, chemical, and biological emergencies. His key research interests include performing state-of-the-art demographic and location research studies related to emergency planning for businesses, special facilities, and special-needs populations. He also has broad research background and expertise in estimating socioeconomic effects; evaluating public risk perception-based impact concerns; relicensing nuclear power plants; and developing mitigation options with regard to the storage, transport, and disposal of high-level radioactive waste.
Dr. Metz is the author of more than 30 articles on emergency planning, public perception of risk, legal issues, energy technology potential, transportation, social and economic assessment methodologies, policy, economic risk assessment, facility siting, public participation, vulnerable populations, and socioeconomic impact mitigation strategies. His work has been published in journals as diverse as Risk Analysis, Traffic Quarterly, Radwaste Magazine, Public Utilities Fortnightly, Electrical World, Aware, Nuclear News, Science, Minerals and the Environment, Transportation Quarterly, Town Planning Review, Impact Assessment Bulletin, Forum, Growth and Change, Nuclear Safety, Journal of Emergency Management, and International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters. He is also listed in Who’s Who in America and the World.
Dr. Metz received a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Pittsburgh, an M.B.A. from Dowling College, an M.I.S. from Aurora University, an M.A. in Geography from the University of Rhode Island, and a B.A. in History from Bates College.
