Analysis of the Korean Power System in a Changing Environment

Korea Power SystemBackground: The Center for Energy, Environmental, and Economic Systems Analysis (CEEESA) is currently collaborating with the Korean Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI). Phase 1 focuses on analyzing the Korean electric power generating system, taking into consideration the ongoing deregulation of the electric power market as well as environmental and economic constraints. The work leverages research results and models available to KEPRI through its past experiences with Argonne, such as the Energy and Power Evaluation Program (ENPEP), the Generation and Transmission Maximization Model (GTMax), and the SIMPACTS/AIRPACTS tool available through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The proposed work will help the Korean government and its generating companies implement an integrated resource plan that accounts for the many complex and changing environmental, economic, and institutional constraints. This work will consider not only the direct impacts of the electric power generating system on the environment, but also the financial issues related to the economics of power generation, focusing on fossil-fuel-powered and renewable-powered generating systems.

In phase 2 of the project, the focus is directed at nuclear power. Specifically, CEEESA is supporting KEPRI in conducting an integrated assessment of nuclear power in Korea that accounts for a number of environmental and economic constraints. The work in this Phase will leverage research results and models available to KEPRI through its past experiences with Argonne, such as the Wien Automatic System Planning Package (WASP IV) and the SIMPACTS/NukPacts tools.

Model Transfer, Training, and Capacity Building: As part of the project, CEEESA has transferred the latest versions of several software products (ENPEP, GTMax) to KEPRI. CEEESA has extensive expertise and experience in capacity building by assisting our software users around the world in the form of training and implementation support. Over the last 25+ years, we have conducted training courses in many locations around the world and have successfully trained over 1300 experts from more than 90 countries in the use of our tools. Our models are actively in use in many of these countries.

Training courses and workshops can be tailored to your specific needs and can last anywhere between a few days to a couple of weeks. Courses may be held at Argonne's facility in the Chicago area or at your facilities.
